Kalvin White and three juvenile accomplices robbed a man at gunpoint in Boystown, then made it considerably easier for cops to catch them by abandoning their stolen getaway car in the local police station’s parking lot.
The Hyundai was still running with all four doors wide open when an officer found it at the entrance to the Town Hall (19th) District station’s parking lot. Cops reviewed surveillance video, broadcast descriptions of the suspects, and arrested all four within minutes.
On Wednesday, after White pleaded guilty to armed robbery and possessing a stolen motor vehicle, Judge Anjana Hansen handed him an 11-year sentence.
Just before 5 a.m. on April 11, 2024, White and three juveniles, a 13-year-old boy and two 16-year-old boys, arrived in the area in a Hyundai that had just been stolen from the 1000 block of West Buena, prosecutors said. Its steering column had been peeled.
As the group reached the 900 block of West Waveland, they allegedly jumped out of the Hyundai and robbed a 37-year-old man. Prosecutors said they went through the man’s pockets, held him at gunpoint, and struck him in the back of the head with the weapon.
The four then returned to the stolen Hyundai and drove away. But they didn’t go far.
The group abandoned the car at the entrance to the parking lot behind the Town Hall District station at 850 West Addison. Officers inside the station reviewed surveillance footage and radioed descriptions of the four people who had fled the Hyundai to patrol units.
Moments later, officers arrested all four and recovered a firearm from one of the juveniles at the Addison Red Line station. Prosecutors said police also found the robbery victim’s keys, iPhone, AirPods and an ATM receipt from the victim’s account in White’s jacket pocket. White also had a flathead screwdriver and a pocket knife. Police concluded the tools may have been used to steal the Hyundai that the group abandoned behind the police station.
White had already been arrested by CPD three weeks before the robbery in another stolen Hyundai case. According to CPD records, officers allegedly saw White getting out of a stolen Hyundai Sonata in the 900 block of West 86th Street. The vehicle had been taken from a woman who lives in the 3900 block of North Janssen in Lakeview.
White was charged with misdemeanor criminal trespassing to a vehicle and released from the police station.
Three weeks later, prosecutors said, White was back in another stolen Hyundai, this time with three juveniles and a firearm. The outcomes of the juveniles’ cases are not available because their court records are shielded from public review.
