81-Year-Old Florida Woman Jailed After Murder-for-Hire Sting

Authorities in Citrus County have arrested an 81-year-old woman for allegedly attempting to hire a hitman to kill another person.

Elouise Ruth Leland was taken into custody on Friday, January 16, following a sting operation conducted by the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) in coordination with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office. She faces a charge of solicitation to commit first-degree murder and is being held without bond.

The investigation began earlier this month after detectives received a tip that Leland was actively seeking someone to carry out a murder. Acting on the information, law enforcement arranged a meeting between Leland and an undercover detective posing as a contract killer.

During the meeting, authorities say Leland discussed details of the alleged plot and agreed to provide compensation in exchange for the killing. Following the encounter, detectives obtained an arrest warrant and took Leland into custody without incident.

“Thanks to the quick actions of our Criminal Investigations Division and partnership with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, we were able to prevent the senseless murder of another,” said Sheriff David Vincent. “We will continue to work closely with the Fifth Judicial Circuit State Attorney’s Office to ensure Leland is held fully accountable for her actions.”

Investigators have confirmed no other suspects were involved and that the intended victim is not in danger. Leland remains in the Citrus County Detention Facility pending further proceedings.
