Police Arrest Ohio Man Accused of Breaking Into Home and Assaulting Ex-Girlfriend, Another Man

Police have arrested the Ohio man accused of breaking into his ex-girlfriend’s home and assaulting her and another individual early Thursday morning.

Austin Michael Harper, 30, of Ironton, Ohio, was taken into custody around 6:30 p.m. Thursday, according to the Kenova Police Department.

“Thanks to information provided by a number of our great citizens, we have Austin Michael Harper in custody,” the department said in a social media post. “We appreciate each and every one of you.”

Police said Harper is scheduled to be arraigned before a Wayne County magistrate on Friday morning.

Earlier Thursday, police had been searching for Harper in connection with an incident in the 800 block of 13th Street in Kenova. According to a news release from the Kenova Police Department, Harper was wanted on charges of burglary, malicious assault, and destruction of property.

Police allege Harper first damaged his ex-girlfriend’s vehicle before forcing his way into her home, where an altercation took place. A caller reported hearing an argument followed by gunshots, according to the release.

The woman suffered minor injuries, while a man inside the residence sustained serious cuts and abrasions to his head and face and was transported to a local hospital in stable condition. A child inside the home was not injured.

During the investigation, police said Harper later arrived at a hospital in Ashland, Kentucky, claiming he had been shot in Kenova but did not provide further details. He reportedly left the hospital without receiving medical treatment.

Authorities have not confirmed how Harper sustained the gunshot injury.
