St. Albans Man Accused of Abandoning Pregnant Dog Inside Camper, Records Say

Authorities arrested a Kanawha County man accused of abandoning a pregnant dog inside a camper, according to court records.

David Manville McKean, 43, of St. Albans, faces a charge of animal cruelty, according to a criminal complaint filed in Kanawha County Magistrate Court.

Deputies said they received a complaint in mid-January about an abandoned dog.

Investigators reported that neighbors told them McKean left the dog inside a camper and abandoned it for about two months. Neighbors said they fed the dog while it remained on the property.

Records state that humane officers could not initially locate the dog because it had chewed a hole through the camper floor to escape.

About a week later, the complaint says the dog was found “injured and tied to the same camper.” Deputies took the animal to a veterinary clinic, where staff treated lacerations and abrasions on her paw pads and determined that she was pregnant.

“McKean has not called in due to the ice storm and inclement weather asking about his dog which he abandoned at his camper,” the complaint states.

McKean is being held at the South Central Regional Jail on a $1,000 surety-cash bond.
