Miami Beach Hotels Benefit as Northern Snowstorm Strands Travelers

Hotels in Miami Beach are seeing a boost in business as travelers delayed by a northern snowstorm extend their stays in South Florida.

Derek Powers, who is trying to return to Boston, said he expects his flight to be canceled due to frigid weather conditions up north. In the meantime, he’s staying at The Betsy Hotel on Ocean Drive and may need to book an extra night.

Hotel owner Jonathan Plutzik said guests who are forced to stay longer tend to spend more time — and money — at the hotel instead of venturing out to other South Beach attractions. Many are simply waiting out the storm and adjusting travel plans.

Chef Laurent Tourondel, who had planned to travel to Milan, Italy, said his flight was rerouted through New York and delayed. He noted that extended guest stays have kept the hotel’s restaurant busy, benefiting staff and operations.

The travel disruptions are also affecting operations at Miami International Airport, as passengers navigate delays tied to severe winter weather in northern states.

While snow and freezing temperatures snarl travel elsewhere, Miami Beach’s hospitality industry is enjoying an unexpected uptick in business.
