WV Guard Members Shot in the Line of Duty Receive Purple Hearts

President Donald Trump presented the Purple Heart to two West Virginia National Guard members who were shot in the line of duty last year during his State of the Union Address Tuesday night.

U.S. Army Specialist Sarah Beckstrom and Air Force Staff Sergeant Andrew Wolfe came under fire during an attack while they were on patrol in Washington, D.C., on November 26, 2025.

Beckstrom later died from her injuries, and Wolfe suffered critical injuries.

Beckstrom’s family attended the State of the Union to accept the Purple Heart on her behalf.

Wolfe attended the State of the Union with his family, where he received the Purple Heart and was honored with a standing ovation.

Governor Patrick Morrisey issued the following statement on the guard members receiving Purple Hearts.

“It was a solemn and unforgettable moment, one that ensured their courage and sacrifice were honored not only by West Virginia but also before the entire nation,” said Morrisey. “Tonight’s recognition brings lasting honor to their service, offers comfort and affirmation to their families, and reminds our country that the men and women of the National Guard stand ready, and willing, to defend our freedoms.”
