Former Miami News Anchor Eliott Rodriguez Launches Congressional Bid in Florida

Former television journalist Eliott Rodriguez has announced that he is running for the U.S. House of Representatives in Florida’s 27th congressional district.

Rodriguez, a longtime anchor with CBS News Miami, revealed his candidacy Tuesday, saying his campaign will focus on reducing the cost of living, improving accountability in Washington and addressing issues affecting families in  South Florida.

In his campaign announcement, Rodriguez said he felt compelled to run after hearing from residents struggling with rising housing costs and economic pressure in the region.

“For 48 years, you trusted me to tell the truth and listen to your stories,” Rodriguez said. “Today, like so many families, I am concerned that Washington is not delivering for South Florida.”

He said conversations with seniors, small-business owners and young residents influenced his decision to enter politics, particularly as housing affordability in the region continues to worsen.

Rodriguez will challenge incumbent Republican Rep. María Elvira Salazar in what is expected to be a competitive race in the  Miami-Dade area.

The district, which covers much of Miami-Dade County, is considered one of the key battleground seats in the upcoming congressional elections.
