Saturday’s powerful snowstorm created dangerous travel conditions across the Chicago area, leading to nearly 500 crashes on local highways, according to Illinois State Police.
Between 5 a.m. and 11:30 p.m. on Saturday, troopers responded to 414 crashes that caused only property damage and 66 crashes that resulted in injuries. ISP also assisted motorists in about 300 additional incidents.
Troopers continued patrolling the state’s highways throughout the storm.
The snow fell at about an inch per hour during much of the afternoon and evening. O’Hare International Airport recorded 8.4 inches of snowfall — the most ever on a November day in Chicago’s history. The previous record of 8 inches was set on November 6, 1951.
