Man sentenced to up to 30 years for sexual assault during 2023 Michigan football game

A 21-year-old man will spend up to three decades in prison after admitting to sexually assaulting a woman during a 2023 football game at University of Michigan.

Jarrell Childs was sentenced March 3 to 13 to 30 years in prison after pleading no contest in January to first-degree criminal sexual conduct and assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder, according to court records.

Carol Kuhnke, a judge with the Washtenaw County Trial Court, handed down the sentence. Childs also received credit for 694 days already served in jail, roughly two years.

Assault occurred during football game

Police said the attack happened around 10 p.m. on Nov. 4, 2023, while fans attended the Michigan game against Purdue University.

The woman had walked back to her vehicle parked on the golf course at the Ann Arbor Golf and Outing Club near Michigan Stadium to get warmer clothes, according to prosecutors.

Authorities say Childs and a 13-year-old boy approached the woman and assaulted her.

During the attack, the suspects allegedly strangled the victim and stole her watch and credit cards, prosecutors said. Investigators later determined the assault was random and that the suspects did not know the woman.

DNA evidence led to arrest

Police identified Childs as a suspect through DNA evidence, officials said.

A juvenile petition was also filed against the 13-year-old boy. Because he is a minor, details of his case are not publicly available.

Childs had originally faced multiple charges, including three counts of first-degree sexual assault, assault with intent to cause great bodily harm, stealing a financial transaction device and larceny. Several of those charges were dismissed at sentencing.

The assault occurred during the second and third quarters of the game, when thousands of fans were inside the stadium nearby, according to the Ann Arbor Police Department.
