1 dead, 2 injured in shooting at Old Dominion University; suspected gunman also dead

A shooting on the campus of Old Dominion University in Norfolk,  Virginia  left one person dead and two others injured Thursday morning, according to police. Authorities said the suspected gunman was also found dead.

The incident occurred inside Constant Hall, a building that houses the university’s College of Business.

Garrett Shelton, chief of the Old Dominion University Police Department, said during a news conference that two victims were transported to a hospital in Norfolk, while a third person went to a hospital in Virginia Beach, Virginia on their own. Officials said the two surviving victims were in stable condition. The identity of the person who died has not been released.

University officials initially sent an alert informing students and staff that the suspected shooter had been “neutralized.” A short time later, the university issued an all-clear notice stating that the situation had ended and there was no longer an active threat to the campus community.

Students inside the building described chaotic scenes as the incident unfolded. One student said he heard screams coming from nearby before the alarm sounded and people began rushing out of the building.

Another student said he initially believed the alarm was a routine fire drill, but soon realized something was wrong as classmates ran toward a nearby parking garage.

“It was terrifying,” the student said, explaining that many people were shouting and trying to figure out what was happening.

Agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives responded to the scene, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation also assisted local authorities with the investigation.

Following the incident, the university announced that classes would be canceled for the rest of the day.
