School roof torn off by strong gusts

In the suburb of Niles, Illinois, powerful winds ripped a large portion of the roof off Charles H. Walsh Academy.

Resident James Fisher said he was shocked to see pieces of the building’s roof scattered on the ground.

Roofing contractor Dan Wilk said the wind likely lifted the edge of the roof, allowing air to get underneath and tear away the metal, insulation and other materials.

The damage was notable because the school building had undergone renovations in recent years.

Winds cause damage across multiple suburbs

Elsewhere in the region, strong gusts damaged the roof of an apartment building in Elmhurst, Illinois and knocked down trees in Lincolnwood, Illinois, blocking roads and damaging vehicles and homes.

Meanwhile, in Chicago’s Hermosa neighborhood, a large tree fell onto a parked car and blocked a street for several hours.
