A former middle school teacher in Michigan has been arrested after allegedly using artificial intelligence tools to create explicit images of students, according to authorities.
Arrest and Allegations
Keith Johnson, 58, of Three Rivers, was taken into custody on April 2 following an investigation into the misuse of digital technology. Prosecutors say Johnson, a former teacher at Legg Middle School, used an AI-based application to manipulate photos of female students into nude images.
Victims Identified
Investigators confirmed that the victims were students from Branch County who had interactions with Johnson as a teacher, coach, or mentor. Some victims reported having close relationships with him, including attending events and receiving gifts.
Evidence Discovered During Separate Investigation
Authorities discovered the altered images on Johnson’s cellphone while investigating separate allegations from 2025. In that case, he was accused of secretly recording individuals in private settings, including a bathroom and bedroom.
The seizure of his phone during that probe led investigators to uncover the AI-generated content.
Charges Filed
Branch County Prosecutor Zachary Stempien has authorized multiple charges against Johnson, including:
- Four counts of child sexually abusive activity
- Additional felony charges related to computer use in committing crimes
Multi-Agency Investigation
The case involves a coordinated investigation by:
- Coldwater Police Department
- Michigan State Police Cyber Crimes Unit
- Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)
- Three Rivers Police Department
Ongoing Case
Officials have not released further details as the case proceeds. The allegations highlight growing concerns about the misuse of AI technology in criminal activity, particularly involving minors.
The case is expected to move through the court system in the coming months.
