A tattoo artist in Bay City has been sentenced to probation after admitting to sexually assaulting a woman who visited him for a tattoo appointment.
Court Sentencing and Charges
Robert W. Trexler, 49, was sentenced in Bay County Circuit Court after pleading guilty to:
- Assault with intent to commit sexual contact
- Fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct
Judge Jessie Scott Wood ordered Trexler to serve five years of probation, complete a sexual abuse prevention program, and register as a sex offender.
Details of the Incident
According to authorities, the assault occurred on September 18 when a 44-year-old woman visited Trexler’s apartment on the city’s east side for a tattoo session.
The victim told police that Trexler greeted her wearing only a towel before allegedly grabbing and assaulting her despite her repeated resistance.
She later contacted authorities after leaving the residence.
Defendant’s Admission
During court proceedings, Trexler admitted to the offense, stating he grabbed the woman and made unwanted sexual contact.
“I take full responsibility for my actions… I regret my decisions deeply,” he told the court.
Defense Argument and Background
Defense attorney Michael A. Huber argued the incident may have stemmed from a misunderstanding, suggesting Trexler misinterpreted the woman’s intentions when she contacted him for a tattoo.
The defense also noted that Trexler has no prior sex-related criminal history, describing the case as an isolated incident.
Victim and Court Response
The victim did not appear in court but provided statements during the investigation.
Judge Wood acknowledged character letters submitted on Trexler’s behalf but emphasized the seriousness of the crime.
“You committed a crime which violated this woman,” the judge said during sentencing.
Unlicensed Tattoo Practice
Authorities noted that Trexler operated out of his home, which is not a licensed facility.
While Michigan law does not require individual tattoo artists to hold licenses, it mandates that tattooing be conducted only in approved, licensed locations.
Looking Ahead
Trexler received credit for time already served and indicated he plans to continue working as a tattoo artist following his sentencing.
