Fort Lauderdale Police K-9 Shot by Armed Suspect During Burglary Call, Undergoes Surgery

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A police K-9 is recovering after being shot by an armed suspect during a weekend burglary investigation in Fort Lauderdale, authorities said.

According to the Fort Lauderdale Police Department, K-9 Appie, a 4-year-old Belgian Malinois, was struck in the shoulder while assisting officers in apprehending a fleeing suspect on Saturday night.

Police identified the suspect as 30-year-old Christian Q. Bouie, who is now in custody and facing multiple charges, including using a deadly weapon against a police animal.

The incident began when officers responded to a reported burglary in the 1600 block of Northwest 16th Court. Authorities established a perimeter after arriving at the scene, but Bouie allegedly attempted to escape.

Officers deployed K-9 Appie to help locate and detain the suspect. During the pursuit, Bouie reportedly opened fire, hitting the dog. Appie was immediately transported to an emergency veterinary hospital and underwent surgery. Officials say the K-9 is expected to survive.

Bouie was also taken to a hospital for treatment after being bitten by the police dog during the encounter.

Investigators confirmed that a firearm was recovered at the scene. The case remains under active investigation.

K-9 Appie has been serving with the department since mid-2023 and is considered a valued member of the force.
