Police arrested a 19-year-old Chicago man in Phoenix, Arizona, over the weekend and charged him with attempted first-degree murder in connection with a November shooting at a South Side Jewel-Osco.
Chicago police identified the suspect as Elijah Theodore. Officers arrested him in Phoenix on Friday, extradited him to Chicago, and formally charged him.
According to investigators, Theodore shot a 46-year-old man who stepped in during a robbery at the Jewel-Osco in the 400 block of East 34th Street in the Lake Meadows neighborhood during the late morning hours of Nov. 11.
Witnesses said the 46-year-old man worked as a security guard. Police reported that he suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the body and was transported to a nearby hospital in serious condition. Two women were also injured in the shooting.
People inside the store described the chaos to WGN-TV, saying customers and employees rushed to find cover. One shopper said she hid behind the meat counter and heard six to eight gunshots.
Theodore appeared in court Saturday for a detention hearing.
