19-year-old killed, 2 others wounded in Liberty City shooting near Charles Hadley Park

A 19-year-old man was killed, and two 18-year-olds are recovering after a shooting near Charles Hadley Park in Liberty City on Monday evening.

Police said multiple shooters may have been involved in the gunfire, which broke out around 6:45 p.m. near NW 50th Street and 13th Avenue and stretched to NW 51st Street. Officers responded after receiving a ShotSpotter alert reporting numerous gunshots.

“When we arrived, we found a 19-year-old shot multiple times on NW 51st Street and NW 13th Avenue,” said Officer Mike Vega of the Miami Police Department. Paramedics transported the victim to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Investigators recovered a rifle at the scene and believe the 19-year-old may have been one of the shooters.

Neighbors reported hearing eight to 10 gunshots while inside their homes. “Saw a bunch of teenagers or kids storm off,” one neighbor told reporters.

Police said one 18-year-old man was shot in the leg and ran to Charles Hadley Park for help, while another 18-year-old contacted authorities to report he had also been shot in the leg. Both are expected to survive.

“We’re still investigating to see what led to this, where did they come from, what were they doing,” said Officer Vega. “We know there was a group of young males hanging out in an alleyway between the block.”

Detectives are reviewing surveillance footage and Ring camera video from nearby homes and businesses as they work to determine what happened. A bullet also struck the park’s senior center, though no additional injuries were reported.

Authorities have not released the name of the 19-year-old who was killed and are asking anyone with information about the shooting to come forward.
