7 arrested in Florida retail theft ring as police recover over $900K in stolen merchandise

Authorities in Florida have arrested seven people linked to a large organized retail theft operation that resulted in the recovery of more than $900,000 worth of stolen merchandise.

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier announced the arrests Wednesday following a months-long investigation spanning multiple counties.

According to investigators, the suspects were taken into custody in Martin County and are currently being held in the county jail. They face several charges, including conspiracy to commit racketeering, dealing in stolen property and organized r retail theft. At least one of the suspects is from Hialeah.

Authorities said the investigation began in November 2024 and uncovered a network of shoplifters, known as “boosters,” who targeted major retailers such as CVS, Walgreens, Publix, Burlington, Macy’s and Ulta Beauty across 12 counties. The thieves allegedly filled bags with health and beauty products before leaving the stores without paying.

Investigators say the stolen goods were sold to a Hialeah resident, Naychel Jerez, who then resold the merchandise online through platforms like Facebook Marketplace and OfferUp.

From Jerez’s home, investigators recovered nearly $124,000 worth of stolen merchandise along with more than $51,000 in cash.

Attorney General Uthmeier said organized retail theft ultimately harms consumers because businesses often increase prices to offset losses and security costs.

Rosie Cordero Stutz, sheriff of the  Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, also warned criminals that law enforcement agencies will pursue those who organize theft operations, even if they attempt to operate across multiple counties.

Florida has recently strengthened penalties for organized retail theft. In 2024, Ron DeSantis signed legislation increasing punishments for repeat offenders, with some facing prison sentences of up to 30 years.
