Hobart Man Charged After Vehicle Pursuit, Threat Toward Officer

A 57-year-old Hobart man, Derek Shawn Ebeltoft, is facing felony charges after a traffic stop in Gary escalated into a brief pursuit and an alleged threat against a sheriff’s officer.

According to a probable cause affidavit, a Lake County Sheriff’s Officer attempted to stop a red Ford Escape around 11:17 a.m. on Jan. 8, 2026, after observing the vehicle turn without signaling near 25th Avenue and Harrison Street. Despite emergency lights being activated, the vehicle continued westbound. Sirens were then used, and the driver was seen looking into the rearview mirror but continued driving several blocks before stopping near 26th Avenue and Fillmore Street.

The driver was identified as Ebeltoft and taken into custody. He told officers he did not realize law enforcement was trying to stop him. However, a female passenger stated Ebeltoft knew he was being pulled over but chose not to stop until reaching his residence. She said she asked him to stop or let her out, but he refused.

During the investigation, officers learned Ebeltoft had an active felony warrant out of Porter County.

While being transported to the Lake County Jail, Ebeltoft allegedly became hostile and made vulgar remarks toward the officer. The affidavit states he threatened the officer, saying he was going to “kick you in the face.”

Ebeltoft was booked into the Lake County Jail. The female passenger was released and took possession of the vehicle.
