Woman Charged With DUI Manslaughter in Fatal Davie Crash

A West Park woman is facing DUI manslaughter charges after police say she ran a red light while intoxicated and caused a deadly crash involving an off-duty police officer.

Investigators said Shelvinia Wright, 50, was driving a Kia Optima around 2 a.m. on Sept. 15, 2024, at the intersection of University Drive and State Road 84 when she entered against a red light. Her car was struck on the passenger side by a Chevrolet Tahoe driven by an off-duty former Miami-Dade police officer who had the green light.

Davie Fire Rescue pronounced Wright’s front-seat passenger dead at the scene about 40 minutes later.

According to police reports, Wright admitted after the crash that she had been drinking. Blood tests taken more than two hours later showed her blood alcohol content at 0.14%, nearly twice the legal limit. An additional test an hour later still showed a BAC of 0.11%, leading investigators to conclude her level was likely higher at the time of the crash.

Wright was arrested Monday and booked into the Broward County Jail on DUI manslaughter and related charges. She remains held on a $135,000 bond with conditions that include surrendering her passport, not driving, remaining in Broward County, GPS monitoring, and submitting to random drug and alcohol testing twice a week.
