Calumet City Man Charged After 100 MPH Police Pursuit, Crash, and OWI in Schererville

A Calumet City, Illinois man is facing numerous felony and misdemeanor charges after police say he led officers on a dangerous high-speed chase exceeding 100 miles per hour before crashing and showing signs of intoxication.

Jhonatan Ulloa, 22, was arrested following the pursuit on the night of February 1, according to a probable cause affidavit filed by Schererville Police.

Police said an officer first observed a dark gray Infiniti G37 traveling eastbound on U.S. 30 near the west Walmart entrance at approximately 9:10 p.m. The vehicle was reportedly moving at about 80 mph in a 35 mph zone and weaving between lanes.

When the officer attempted to catch up, the vehicle accelerated. Near Robinhood Boulevard, the driver allegedly began aggressively changing lanes and “lane splitting,” nearly striking two vehicles near Anna Street. Emergency lights were activated, but the driver refused to stop, prompting a pursuit.

Authorities said the Infiniti continued passing vehicles by driving on the shoulder and lane splitting near Trenta Court and Hilltop Drive. Near Austin Avenue, the vehicle allegedly reached speeds exceeding 100 mph while weaving through traffic and nearly losing control.

As the vehicle approached the bike trail overpass, officers reported seeing it brake suddenly, lose control, cross the median into oncoming traffic lanes, and slide into an embankment. Officers performed a U-turn near Cline Avenue and approached the crashed vehicle.

Police identified the driver as Ulloa, who was standing outside the driver’s door with his hands raised. Officers ordered him to get on the ground, but he allegedly refused to comply. After repeated commands and a Taser being drawn, Ulloa was taken into custody.

Officers reported Ulloa had bloodshot, glossy eyes and a strong odor of alcohol on his breath. He refused to perform standardized field sobriety tests and also refused a chemical breath test.

During an inventory search of the vehicle, police said they located two bottles of Hennessy — one empty and one approximately three-quarters full — as well as a green leafy substance on the front passenger seat that field-tested positive for marijuana.

Ulloa was transported to a hospital for medical clearance, where he refused treatment. Police later obtained a warrant for a blood draw.
