A veteran from Putnam County will receive recognition at a national tribute event this spring, organizers announced.
U.S. Army Capt. James McCormick of Scott Depot has been chosen as one of the nation’s 2026 Purple Heart Patriot Project honorees during a mission set for April 27 through May 1, according to a news release from the organization.
Organizers said they selected McCormick from hundreds of nominees in recognition of his bravery and dedication to both his country and community.
McCormick served 24 years in the Army and achieved the rank of Captain.
This year’s Patriot Project Mission will recognize members from all military branches and include visits to historic locations such as the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, the 9/11 Memorial and the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor.
National Purple Heart Honor Mission executive director Col. Russell Vernon released a statement on the selection:
These Patriot Project missions recognize the sacrifices made by our Purple Heart recipients and honor those who never made it home. They provide an invaluable opportunity for these heroes to bond with other combat wounded to help with healing, understanding and of course, know that this nation will never forget their sacrifice. We received hundreds of nominations from across the country, and we look forward to honoring James for his courage and service, both during combat operations and in the years since returning home.
The release noted that McCormick, a three-time Purple Heart recipient, enlisted in 1985 and served 24 years with the 24th Infantry Division and the 101st Airborne Division. He deployed to the Middle East during Desert Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom.
McCormick received the Silver Star, three Bronze Stars with Valor, two Meritorious Service Medals and the Army Commendation Medal with Valor.
“It was the honor of my life,” McCormick stated. “I come from a long line of service, three generations of Purple Heart recipients and a Gold Star family. My service is part of that legacy.”
