Russell County Teen Dies After Collapsing During High School Softball Tryouts

A 15-year-old student at Russell County High School died Monday after collapsing during softball tryouts in Russell County.

Russell County Coroner officials believe Brylie Northcutt died from a pulmonary embolism, a blood clot in the lung. The cause of the clot has not yet been determined, and additional testing is underway.

According to school officials, tryouts were just beginning Monday afternoon at a ball field in Russell Springs when Northcutt indicated she was having difficulty breathing. Coaches immediately began assisting her.

The school activated its crisis response team Monday night. Counselors, ministers and staff members were made available Tuesday to support students and faculty coping with the loss.

Northcutt previously played on the middle school softball team and had been preparing to compete at the high school level. School leaders described her as a quiet student who was active in her church youth group and a member of FFA.

Funeral arrangements are pending. A GoFundMe page has been created to assist her family with funeral expenses.
