East Chicago Man Facing Gun and Drug Charges After Gary Traffic Stop

A 23-year-old man from East Chicago is facing multiple felony firearm and drug charges following a traffic stop in Gary, according to court records.

Breyaun Evans was stopped Feb. 17, 2026, after an officer observed a black Chevy Impala disregard a traffic signal near 5th Avenue and Burr Street. Police said the vehicle was traveling დაახლოებით 75 mph in a posted 40 mph zone before the stop was initiated. Officers recognized Evans from prior law enforcement contacts and were aware he was wanted in connection to an unrelated vehicle pursuit.

According to court documents, officers observed a firearm on the floorboard near Evans’ leg and detected the odor of raw marijuana coming from the vehicle. Evans reportedly admitted there were bags of marijuana inside. Police said they recovered a baggie containing four tablets from the ashtray cupholder and two additional baggies of suspected marijuana from the back seat.

Investigators stated the recovered weapon was a .223 AR pistol equipped with a machine-gun conversion device, which officers reported would allow the firearm to function as fully automatic. Court documents indicate Evans allegedly stated the firearm was only capable of “burst” fire, but officers noted that still qualifies as a machine gun because more than one round can be fired with a single trigger pull.

Police reported approximately 9.5 grams of suspected marijuana tested positive, and the four tablets field-tested positive for methamphetamine and fentanyl.

Court records also show Evans had a prior marijuana possession conviction in November 2023.

Charges filed Feb. 18, 2026, include:

  • Possession of a Machine Gun — Level 5 Felony

  • Possession of Methamphetamine (<5g) Enhancing Circumstance — Level 5 Felony

  • Possession of a Narcotic Drug (Between 5 and 10g) — Level 5 Felony

  • Possession of a Narcotic Drug (<5g) — Level 6 Felony
