EF3 Tornado Destroys Union Lake Home in Michigan

A powerful EF3 tornado left a home in ruins near Union Lake in Union City after violent storms swept through the area on March 6.

Homeowner Chris Henke said the property, where he had planned to retire with his wife, was likely a total loss after the storm tore through the area. The couple was not home when the tornado struck, but the damage they returned to was devastating.

The tornado ripped apart sections of the roof and walls, and even carried a toolshed into the living room. Broken glass and debris covered the home as Henke walked through the remains trying to recover belongings.

The tornado was part of a powerful supercell storm system that produced several other twisters across southern Michigan. Additional tornadoes included an EF1 in Edwardsburg, an  EF2 in Three Rivers and an EF0 in Calhoun County.

Officials said the Union City tornado ranks among the strongest to strike Michigan since a destructive tornado hit Kalamazoo in 1980. The outbreak also marked the deadliest day for tornadoes in the state since that year.
