LAPD boosts downtown patrols after street takeover spills into apartment complex

The Los Angeles Police Department is increasing patrols in downtown Los Angeles following a street takeover that recently spilled into a nearby apartment complex.

Police said the expanded presence will include patrol cars, horse patrols, foot patrols and undercover officers in areas such as the Figueroa Street and L.A. Live corridor.

LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell called the incident disturbing and said the department is responding to concerns from residents, businesses and visitors in the busy downtown district.

Street takeovers have become increasingly common across Los Angeles County, with crowds gathering at intersections while drivers perform stunts such as spinning donuts. Large groups often scatter when police arrive, and in some cases nearby businesses have been damaged or looted.

During the recent incident, police said a large crowd moved into the Circa LA Apartments after officers broke up the gathering.

Karen Bass, mayor of Los Angeles, said the city has zero tolerance for the gatherings and warned participants that police will take action against those involved.

Last year, Nathan Hochman, the  district attorney  for Los Angeles County, called for stronger penalties for people involved in street takeovers. Authorities say some events are organized through social media and may move between several locations in a single night to avoid police intervention.
