Former Washtenaw County sergeant likely would have been fired amid sexual assault probe

A former sergeant with the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office in Washtenaw County, Michigan likely would have lost his job following an internal investigation if he had not resigned beforehand, according to state law enforcement records.

The sergeant, Jeremy Yono, stepped down from his position on March 5, before the sheriff’s office completed its internal review into allegations related to a relationship with a subordinate officer.

Criminal charges not filed

The case had also been examined by the Michigan State Police at the request of the sheriff’s office. After reviewing the investigation, the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office announced that no criminal sexual conduct charges would be filed against Yono.

Authorities have not publicly released details about the allegations or the circumstances that led to the investigation.

Internal probe found policy violations likely

Although the criminal case did not lead to charges, an internal inquiry by the sheriff’s office concluded that Yono likely violated several departmental policies.

Documents from the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards indicate the alleged violations involved policies covering harassment and discrimination, conduct unbecoming of an officer, neglect of duty, truthfulness, insubordination and supervisory responsibilities.

According to the separation affidavit signed by Alyshia Dyer, the county’s sheriff, the probable outcome of the investigation would have been termination of employment.

Investigation linked to county dispute

The case also contributed to broader tensions between the sheriff’s office and the Washtenaw County Board of Commissioners. Last year, commissioners approved a resolution taking control of significant parts of the department’s human resources operations after reports of internal misconduct.

Dyer later filed a lawsuit challenging the move, arguing that it improperly interfered with her authority as sheriff. The case is currently pending before John McBain, a judge with the Jackson County Circuit Court.

Background of the case

Records show Yono received his law enforcement license in 2019 while working for the Detroit Police Department before joining the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office later that year. He was promoted to sergeant in June 2025.

Officials said the sheriff’s office first received a complaint in August 2025 alleging an inappropriate relationship between Yono and a subordinate deputy. He was placed on leave and his law enforcement authority was suspended in September while the investigation proceeded.

After the criminal probe ended without charges, the internal investigation continued until Yono resigned.

Further records related to the investigation may be released following a request under the Michigan Freedom of Information Act, though officials said that process could take several weeks.
