Jury convicts U.P. man in 2023 killing of pregnant woman after lengthy trial

A jury has found a man guilty in the 2023 killing of his pregnant former girlfriend following a nearly two-week trial in Delta County, Michigan.

According to reports, Tavaris L. Jackson Jr., 35, was convicted Thursday in Delta County Circuit Court for the death of Harley Corwin, a 22-year-old woman from Escanaba, Michigan.

Corwin, who already had two children, was pregnant at the time of her death in July 2023.

Body discovered after disappearance

Corwin had been reported missing before her body was discovered in a wooded area near OB Fuller Park in Ford River Township, Michigan.

During the trial, testimony revealed that she died from two gunshot wounds to the head.

Multiple convictions

Jurors convicted Jackson on several charges, including:

  • First-degree premeditated murder

  • Assault of a pregnant person causing miscarriage or stillbirth

  • Felony firearm

The verdict reportedly brought relief to people in the courtroom who had followed the case closely.

Sentencing scheduled

Jackson is scheduled to be sentenced at 1:30 p.m. on June 2 in the 47th Circuit Court in Delta County.

Prosecutors previously offered Jackson a plea agreement in 2024 that would have required him to plead guilty to second-degree murder and assault of a pregnant person, with a possible sentence of 40 to 80 years in prison. He declined the offer and chose to go to trial.
