Police fatally shoot knife-wielding man during domestic assault response in Traverse City

Police in Traverse City, Michigan shot and killed a man Friday evening after he allegedly advanced toward officers with a knife inside an apartment, authorities said.

The shooting occurred around 4:45 p.m. on March 13 at an apartment building on the 400 block of Munson Place. Officers from the Traverse City Police Department had responded to a report of a domestic assault involving a weapon.

Officers confronted armed suspect inside apartment

According to Police Chief Matt Richmond, officers entered the apartment and found a 50-year-old man lying on the living room floor. After officers announced their presence, the man reportedly stood up while holding a knife.

Richmond said the suspect then moved toward officers despite repeated verbal commands to stop.

Officers first attempted to subdue the man using a Taser, but the device did not stop him. Police then fired their service weapons.

“The officers discharged their duty weapons, stopping the threat,” Richmond said during a press briefing.

Woman injured during domestic incident

Authorities said a 58-year-old woman inside the apartment had been injured during the earlier domestic assault. She was taken to Munson Medical Center for treatment.

Police performed life-saving measures on the suspect at the scene, but he later died from his injuries.

State police leading investigation

None of the officers involved were hurt during the incident. As is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings, the officers have been placed on paid administrative leave.

The investigation has been turned over to the Michigan State Police, which will review the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Authorities have not yet released the name of the man who was killed.
