Long TSA lines and flight delays hit South Florida airports amid shutdown, storms and spring break travel

MIAMI, Fla. — Travelers at major South Florida airports faced long security lines, flight delays and cancellations Monday as a partial federal government shutdown, stormy weather and heavy spring break travel created major disruptions.

Hundreds of flights were delayed or canceled at  Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and Miami International Airport, leaving passengers waiting for hours.

At one point Monday morning, the security line for the Transportation Security Administration  at Terminal 1 stretched outside the building and down the sidewalk.

Many travelers were seen sitting on their luggage while waiting for updates on their flights.

One passenger said the long wait had been exhausting after standing in line for an extended period.

Travelers struggle with delays and cancellations

Some travelers said they arrived early to avoid the crowds but still encountered unexpected lines.

Another passenger, trying to rebook a canceled flight from the previous day, said severe weather had forced airlines to change routes, and the plane did not have enough fuel for the new path, resulting in the cancellation.

At Terminal 2, the baggage drop line also stretched out the entrance doors, while long security lines were reported at Terminal 3.

Despite the chaos, some passengers said the situation was not as bad as what they had seen circulating on social media.

Shutdown affecting airport staffing

Airline executives are urging lawmakers in Washington, D.C. to approve funding for airport security operations during the partial shutdown.

According to officials, more than 300 TSA officers have resigned since the shutdown began, and unscheduled absences among employees have increased significantly.

Travelers heading to South Florida airports are being advised to arrive much earlier than usual and prepare for potential delays as busy spring break travel continues.
