Zoo Miami tightens security after multiple bomb threats force evacuations

MIAMI, Fla. — Security has been increased at Zoo Miami after a series of bomb threats over several days forced repeated evacuations of visitors and staff.

On Monday, deputies from the  Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, along with K9 units, were seen stationed near the entrance of the zoo as authorities responded to the threats.

Zoo officials said the facility has received daily bomb threats since Friday, disrupting operations throughout the weekend. Each time a threat was reported, guests and employees were evacuated while deputies searched the property.

The first incident occurred Friday when an anonymous caller reportedly warned of a bomb at the zoo. The most recent threat was reported around noon on Sunday, officials said.

After each evacuation, law enforcement officers conducted security sweeps before declaring the area safe and allowing operations to resume.

Visitors react to increased security

Some visitors said the situation was unsettling but they still chose to visit the attraction.

Others said they felt reassured seeing the heightened security presence around the zoo entrance.

Zoo officials announced on social media that additional security measures would be in place Monday as a precaution following the threats.

When contacted for comment, Zoo Miami directed inquiries to the Miami-Dade Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department, which said more information would be released as the investigation continues.

Authorities have not reported any injuries related to the threats. The source of the calls remains under investigation.
