A sheriff’s deputy in western Kentucky is in critical condition after a shooting incident at a home in Crittenden County, where authorities say a suspect was killed during an exchange of gunfire.
According to the Kentucky State Police, the shooting occurred around 5 p.m. on April 2, 2026, along Kentucky 365 in Sturgis.
Gunfire Erupts During Service of Legal Papers
Officials said deputies from the Crittenden County Sheriff’s Office, along with personnel from the Kentucky Department of Community Based Services, arrived at the residence to serve emergency guardianship documents.
During the encounter, gunfire broke out between law enforcement and the suspect.
The injured deputy has been identified as Rick Coyle, a veteran officer who sustained serious injuries in the incident.
Deputy in Critical Condition
Authorities confirmed that Coyle remains in critical condition at Deaconess Midtown Hospital, where he is receiving treatment.
Local officials described his injuries as severe and asked the community to keep him in their thoughts.
Suspect Killed, Woman Rescued
The suspect, identified as 60-year-old Ronnie Phillips, was shot and killed by responding officers during the confrontation.
Police also confirmed that a woman inside the home was safely removed and no other injuries were reported.

In a public message, Andy Beshear urged residents to support the injured deputy and his family.
“Deputy Coyle showed the utmost bravery while protecting our commonwealth, and his family and fellow officers need our support right now,” the governor said.
Local officials and law enforcement agencies across the region have also expressed support following the incident.
Veteran Officer With Decades of Service
Coyle brings nearly 30 years of law enforcement experience, having previously served with the Chicago Police Department before retiring and relocating to Crittenden County in 2019.
He later became a school resource officer at local middle and high schools in 2024, where he was known for his commitment to student safety and violence prevention.
Investigation Underway
The Kentucky State Police Critical Incident Response Team has been assigned to investigate the officer-involved shooting.
Officials noted that the timeline for completing the investigation will depend on the complexity of the case.
