Michigan Judge Reacts to Video in Deadly Birthday Party Shooting Case: ‘It Just Makes Me Ill’

KALAMAZOO, Michigan — A judge expressed shock and disgust after viewing video evidence tied to a fatal shooting outside a child’s birthday party, as the accused gunman now faces trial.

Nelson Devon Cobas, 37, has been bound over to circuit court following a preliminary hearing on April 9, according to Richard Santoni of the Kalamazoo County District Court.

Deadly Shooting Outside Birthday Celebration

Cobas is accused of opening fire during an incident that unfolded around 5 p.m. on Feb. 22 in the 100 block of East Paterson Street in Kalamazoo.

Authorities say the shooting resulted in the death of Jamel Jonte-Jerome Coleman, 35, while a 33-year-old woman was also injured.

Judge Reacts to Evidence

During the hearing, Judge Santoni reportedly reacted strongly after reviewing video footage connected to the case, stating that what he saw “just makes me ill,” highlighting the disturbing nature of the incident.

Case Moves to Circuit Court

With the preliminary hearing complete, the case will now proceed to circuit court, where Cobas will face further legal proceedings related to the fatal shooting.

Authorities have not released additional details about a possible motive, and the investigation remains ongoing.
