A violent robbery in downtown Los Angeles early Monday left an elderly man severely injured after he was beaten and set on fire, according to police.
Officers with the Los Angeles Police Department responded to reports of an assault around midnight near the intersection of Sixth and Hope Street. When they arrived, they found a man in his 70s lying on the ground with serious burn injuries.
Authorities said the victim had been attacked during a robbery, beaten, and then set on fire. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he remains in serious condition.
Investigators confirmed that a suspect has been taken into custody and is expected to be booked on charges of attempted murder.
Police also noted that a Good Samaritan stopped to assist the victim at the scene. Detectives are currently speaking with that individual and are searching for additional witnesses who may have seen the attack unfold.
Details about what led up to the incident remain unclear as the investigation continues.
