LA County Offers Property Tax Penalty Relief for Eaton and Palisades Fire Survivors

Officials in Los Angeles County are offering relief to property owners affected by recent wildfires, allowing eligible residents to request cancellation of late penalties on property taxes.

Thursday marks the deadline for tax payments in areas impacted by the Eaton Fire and Palisades fire. However, many homeowners are still dealing with displacement and rebuilding efforts following the destruction of entire neighborhoods.

To support those affected, the Los Angeles County Treasurer and Tax Collector is encouraging residents who cannot meet the deadline due to fire-related losses to submit a Penalty Cancellation Request starting May 1.

Under California law, while tax obligations remain in place, officials have the authority to waive penalties and interest in certain situations, including damage caused by wildfires. Homeowners applying for relief must provide their Assessor’s Identification Number and indicate that their property was impacted by the fires.

Authorities noted that each request will be reviewed individually. In some cases, qualifying residents may be able to delay payments for an extended period—potentially until 2030—without incurring additional penalties.

Officials also emphasized that receiving a late notice does not necessarily mean a request for relief has been denied.

Meanwhile, Gavin Newsom voiced support for affected homeowners, stating that those who lost their homes should not be required to pay property taxes based on properties that no longer exist. He added that his office is working with county leaders to ensure clearer guidance and flexible payment options for wildfire survivors.
