Additional Charges Added Against Suspect in W.Va. National Guard Shooting

Rahmanullah Lakanwal, 29, of Afghanistan, is facing additional charges related to the shooting of West Virginia National Guard members in Washington, D.C., prosecutors announced.

According to a release from the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia, Lakanwal now faces two more counts of assault with intent to kill.

U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro said the added charges involve two more victims, identified as R.R. and E.S., the National Guardsmen who were able to subdue Lakanwal at the scene.

Lakanwal is accused of shooting U.S. Army Spc. Sarah Beckstrom and Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe on Nov. 26 near the Farragut Square Metro Station, close to the White House. Both were in Washington, D.C., serving as part of a West Virginia National Guard WVNG deployment at the request of President Donald Trump.

Beckstrom, 20, died the following day from her injuries. Wolfe, 24, remains in recovery at an undisclosed rehabilitation facility.

Previously, Lakanwal was charged with first-degree premeditated murder while armed, assault with intent to kill while armed, four counts of possession of a firearm during a crime of violence or dangerous offense, transporting or receiving firearms in interstate or foreign commerce with intent to commit a felony, and transporting a stolen firearm in interstate or foreign commerce.

The indictment, which was unsealed Friday, formally confirms the charges, according to the release.

“We are vigorously pursuing the prosecution of Lakanwal,” Pirro said in the statement. “Nothing is off the table, and we will continue to weigh additional charges.”
