A 37-year-old man in Ann Arbor has been sentenced to time served after pleading no contest to an assault charge stemming from a 2024 incident.

David Earl Hatten received a 72-day jail sentence, which was fully credited for time he had already served. The ruling effectively concludes the case following a recent court hearing in Washtenaw County.

Incident Began as Alleged Car Break-In

According to police, the incident occurred in September 2024 in downtown Ann Arbor. Hatten was reportedly caught attempting to break into a vehicle along West Huron Street.

A nearby community member confronted him, leading to a physical altercation.

Bicycle Used During Confrontation

During the confrontation, Hatten allegedly struck the individual using a bicycle before fleeing the scene on foot. Authorities later arrested him.

Police confirmed that the victim did not suffer any injuries.

Charges Reduced from Felony to Misdemeanor

Hatten was initially charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, a felony offense. However, he later pleaded no contest to a reduced charge of assault and battery, classified as a misdemeanor.
