Authorities have charged a man with attacking a Chicago television news reporter while she was sitting inside an SUV in the Loop last month.
Court records state that Noah B. Johnson was “mumbling and growling… but never stated anything” as he repeatedly struck the reporter and tried to drag her out of her vehicle near State and Lake on January 2. A judge ordered Johnson held without release pending trial, citing the random and brutal nature of the assault and his seven prior felony convictions.
According to police reports, the reporter began honking her horn to attract attention during the attack. Several bystanders heard the noise, rushed over, and pulled the man away before he fled. Police reports indicate the victim’s salivary gland was detached, and she suffered additional injuries.
Investigators say hotel surveillance footage and a police pod camera captured the incident.
CWB Chicago first reported the arrest. WGN Investigates later examined police reports and court records. WGN does not identify crime victims unless they decide to publicly reveal their names.
Johnson faces charges of vehicular hijacking, aggravated battery, and unlawful vehicular invasion. Prosecutors noted that his seven prior felony convictions include armed robbery and other violent offenses.
“Detention is needed to protect the victim and the community,” prosecutors wrote in a court filing.
Authorities issued a warrant for Johnson’s arrest on January 13, and officers took him into custody on February 5.
