Celebration Man Arrested on Birthday After Alleged Taser Grab at Davenport Car Wash

What was supposed to be a 56th birthday celebration for a Celebration man ended with felony charges and a trip to jail.

Polk County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Jose Alfredo Velez on the afternoon of January 13 following reports of a disturbance at a Davenport car wash.

Deputies arrived around 2:30 p.m. and spoke with employees, who said Velez had been arguing with other customers. When staff asked him to leave, he reportedly refused and continued arguing with the workers.

Two deputies approached Velez regarding the trespassing complaint. According to the arrest report, Velez refused to identify himself, claiming he was not required to do so. Deputies informed him that failing to identify himself during a lawful investigation was a violation, but he continued to refuse.

The situation escalated when deputies attempted to arrest Velez. The Sheriff’s Office reported that he became uncooperative and physically resisted, allegedly trying to grab a Taser from one of the deputies during the struggle.

Officers eventually secured Velez in the back of a patrol car and discovered the incident occurred on his birthday.

Velez was booked on multiple charges, including:

  • Resisting an officer with violence

  • Depriving an officer of means of protection

  • Trespassing

  • Resisting without violence

His vehicle was towed from the scene. Authorities noted that Velez has a prior criminal history, including charges for child abuse and driving with a suspended or revoked license.
