A NEXT Weather Alert remained in effect across South Florida on Monday morning as dangerously cold conditions continued throughout the region.
A Freeze Warning was issued for inland areas of Broward and Miami-Dade counties until 9 a.m. Monday, with temperatures dropping to 32 degrees or lower.
Along with the freeze warning, a Cold Weather Advisory stayed in effect for Broward and Miami-Dade counties until 10 a.m. due to wind chill values falling into the low to mid-20s in some neighborhoods.
Residents across South Florida are urged to take extra precautions to protect people, pets, and plants from the extreme cold.
On Groundhog Day, South Florida once again woke up to frigid temperatures in the 30s, creating conditions similar to those experienced on Sunday.
“You definitely want to bundle up,” CBS News Miami Meteorologist Lissette Gonzalez said. “You want to add an extra winter coat, if you have a puffy coat, absolutely. Why not? This is the time to wear it. We’re not used to this kind of weather. It’s a shock to our system and it can be dangerous, too. Especially for the little ones getting ready for school.”
Cold and breezy conditions will continue throughout the day, with mostly sunny skies and high temperatures only reaching the upper 50s.
A dangerous rip current risk remains along Atlantic beaches, and a Small Craft Advisory is in effect for boaters in Atlantic waters through Tuesday morning. No advisories are currently in place for the Florida Keys.
Overnight temperatures Monday night will dip into the 40s. While not as cold as recent nights, conditions will remain chilly early Tuesday. Highs on Tuesday are expected to reach the upper 60s with abundant sunshine.
A gradual warm-up is expected midweek ahead of the next cold front. Overnight lows will rise into the mid to upper 50s on Wednesday and Thursday, with daytime highs climbing into the low 70s. Breezy conditions and a few spotty showers are also possible.
Another cold front is expected late in the week, bringing overnight lows back into the low to mid-40s. Friday will be cool and crisp, with highs in the upper 60s.
Looking ahead to the weekend, temperatures will moderate, with comfortable highs in the low 70s expected on both Saturday and Sunday.
