A 23-year-old man from Detroit is facing multiple felony charges after allegedly carrying out a drive-by shooting targeting a church in Royal Oak Township.
According to prosecutors, Michael Tyrone Bowers has been charged with discharging a firearm from a vehicle, firing into a building and two counts of felony firearm following the April 16 incident.
Investigators say the suspect allegedly fired multiple rounds at God’s Grace Missionary Baptist Church, prompting a rapid response from Michigan State Police after reports of gunfire in the area.
Authorities discovered bullet damage to the church’s entryway, along with shell casings at the scene. Surveillance footage also captured the vehicle believed to have been used in the shooting, helping investigators identify the suspect.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported, as the church was unoccupied at the time of the attack.
Karen McDonald, the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office, emphasized the seriousness of the incident, noting that places of worship should remain safe spaces for communities.
The case remains under investigation as authorities move forward with prosecution.
