The family of a 28-year-old Riverside man who was fatally struck by a transit bus last year has announced plans to file a $28.5 million wrongful death lawsuit against the Riverside Transit Agency.
According to a news release from Douglas Hicks Law, which represents the family, the incident occurred on Nov. 12, 2025. Chibeza Dudley Nyirenda was attempting to board a public bus at the intersection of Martin Luther King Boulevard and Chicago Avenue, a stop near his home that he regularly used.
“Mr. Nyirenda, a Riverside resident, was lawfully attempting to board a bus …” the release stated. “According to the claim, the bus was operated in a manner that failed to account for the presence of a boarding passenger, resulting in catastrophic and fatal injuries.”
Attorneys said Nyirenda was on the phone with his mother, Marjorie Bradford-Nyirenda, at the time of the crash, and she heard his final words.
The family, joined by attorney Carl Douglas, formally announced the wrongful death claim Tuesday at the law firm’s Los Angeles office.
The claim alleges failures in operation, training, safety enforcement and supervision within the Riverside Transit Agency.
The family is seeking at least $28.5 million in damages, with the possibility of increasing the amount as additional evidence and expert analysis are developed.
KTLA has contacted the Riverside Transit Agency for comment and is awaiting a response.
