Fleming County sheriff alerts public to scam targeting inmates’ families

Fleming County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a phone scam aimed at families of incarcerated individuals.

Sheriff Tim Smith said the office has received several reports of scammers contacting victims and convincing them to send money, resulting in losses totaling thousands of dollars.

According to the sheriff, callers falsely claim they can arrange an inmate’s release, reduce charges, or fix a legal issue if payment is made immediately. The scammers reportedly demand money through electronic payment platforms such as Venmo and Cash App.

Officials emphasized that neither the sheriff’s office nor the Mason County Detention Center would ever request payment through these apps.

Sheriff Smith urged the public not to send money or share personal or banking information with unknown callers. Anyone uncertain about a request is encouraged to contact the detention center or sheriff’s office directly using a verified phone number.

Residents who believe they have been targeted or victimized by the scam are asked to contact Fleming County Dispatch at 606-845-4701.
