Kalamazoo Public Safety Plans Hiring Push to Reach Full Staffing of 253 Officers

KALAMAZOO, Michigan (April 23, 2026) — The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety is preparing to expand its workforce as it works toward reaching full staffing levels of 253 sworn officers.

Officials confirmed the department currently employs 241 sworn officers and is actively seeking to hire additional personnel to fill remaining vacancies.

The hiring initiative comes as the department continues to balance growing public safety demands across police, fire, and emergency medical services responsibilities. KDPS officers are uniquely trained to respond to all three types of emergency calls.

Staffing Expansion Plans

According to department officials, KDPS had also considered adding up to 10 additional positions through a federal grant program, which would have increased total staffing capacity to 263 officers. However, the Kalamazoo City Commission declined to approve the $1.25 million grant earlier this month.

The proposed funding included federal conditions related to immigration enforcement communication policies and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) program restrictions, which contributed to its rejection.

Future Public Safety Needs

City leaders have also pointed to anticipated long-term growth in downtown activity, especially with the planned Kalamazoo Event Center expected to open in 2027. Officials say the facility could increase demand for emergency response services in the area.

Hiring Process and Benefits

The current application window for new recruits closed on April 22, but KDPS typically opens hiring rounds three times a year, with the next expected in the fall.

New hires receive sponsored training through police academy programs as well as additional instruction for fire and medical emergency response roles.

The department also offers several incentives, including a $5,000 annual residency bonus, tuition reimbursement, federal student loan forgiveness eligibility, and additional compensation for Spanish language skills.

As recruitment continues, officials say reaching full staffing remains a priority to maintain response times and public safety coverage across the city.
