A deadly shooting in Adair County ended with three victims dead and the suspect killed by police following an hourslong standoff, according to Kentucky State Police.
Incident Began with 911 Call Reporting Shooting
Authorities say the situation unfolded around 11 a.m. Monday when a 911 call reported a man had shot his brother at a home on Chestnut Grove Road.
When deputies from the Adair County Sheriff’s Office arrived, 38-year-old Ryan Sneed allegedly opened fire, forcing officers and another individual to take cover.
Officers Pinned Down During Hourslong Standoff
Police said Sneed barricaded himself inside the home, triggering a tense standoff that lasted several hours. During that time, he reportedly fired multiple shots at officers, who returned fire on several occasions.
A special response team was eventually deployed to safely extract those pinned down at the scene.
Suspect Shot After Emerging with Weapon
Shortly before 7 p.m., Sneed exited the home armed with a gun. Members of the response team then shot him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
No officers were injured during the incident.
Three Victims Found at Multiple Locations
While the standoff was ongoing, investigators received information about threats made against the suspect’s family.
Welfare checks led to the discovery of two victims at separate homes:
- 67-year-old Joyce Sneed (mother)
- 63-year-old Debra Clark (aunt)
Both were found dead at residences in the area.
After the standoff ended, officers also located 37-year-old Michael Curry, an acquaintance of Sneed, fatally shot inside the original home.

Authorities say separate investigations are now ongoing:
- Detectives are examining the three homicide cases
