Renowned conductor and composer Michael Tilson Thomas, celebrated for his transformative leadership of the San Francisco Symphony, has died at the age of 81.
The symphony confirmed that Thomas passed away at his home on Wednesday, surrounded by family and close friends. He had been battling glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer, since 2021. The illness returned last year, prompting him to step back from public appearances.
Widely known as “MTT,” Thomas was a 12-time Grammy Award winner and one of the most influential figures in modern classical music. His final public appearance took place in April 2025 during a concert marking his 80th birthday.
A Lasting Musical Legacy
Born in Los Angeles in 1944, Thomas built a remarkable career spanning decades. He made his debut with the San Francisco Symphony in 1974 and went on to lead nearly 1,800 performances with the orchestra over a 52-year association.
In 1995, he became the symphony’s music director, a role he held until 2020. During his tenure, the organization expanded its global presence and launched its own recording label, further elevating its international reputation.
Thomas also co-founded the New World Symphony in 1987, helping to mentor generations of young musicians. His career included leadership roles with major orchestras such as the Buffalo Philharmonic, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the London Symphony Orchestra.

Thomas was preceded in death by his husband, Joshua Robison, who passed away earlier this year. He is survived by extended family members.
In honor of his legacy, the San Francisco Symphony announced that upcoming performances of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony in June will be dedicated to him. A separate memorial concert is expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
