An 18-year-old student from Loyola University Chicago was shot and killed early Thursday near the lakefront in Rogers Park, authorities said.
Victim identified
University officials confirmed the victim as Sheridan Gorman.
In a message to the campus community, university president Mark C. Reed expressed condolences, calling the incident a “tragic loss” and extending sympathy to her family and loved ones.

According to Chicago Police Department, the shooting occurred around 1:30 a.m. near Pratt Boulevard by the lakefront.
Investigators said Gorman was walking with a group of friends when an unidentified man approached and opened fire. She was struck in the head and pronounced dead at the scene.

The university issued a campus safety alert, noting that the suspect was wearing a face covering and was last seen near the pier. Officials said there is no ongoing threat to the campus community.
