A 59-year-old man accused of raping a man with disabilities remained in the Broward County Main Jail Sunday after a judge denied him bond.
Paul John was arrested Thursday by Fort Lauderdale police and appeared in court wearing a suicide prevention vest.
According to police records, the victim went to Imperial Point Hospital on December 8, 2024, reporting pain after the alleged assault. Investigators said the victim had been walking to a Walgreens on December 6 when John, driving a Chevrolet Camaro, approached him and offered a job. John reportedly took the victim to lunch, spoke with his mother (who asked him to be patient with her son’s disabilities), and brought him to his home in Fort Lauderdale.
Authorities say John paid the victim $15 to clean his boat, took him to a gay strip club in Flagler Village to play pool, showed him a gun, and then allegedly raped him at his home.
The victim later told his mother’s boyfriend and a detective that he feared for his life. Police also noted John had faced similar accusations in a separate incident.
John is charged with sexual battery on a victim who is mentally defective or incapacitated.
Detectives are asking anyone with information about this or other cases to contact Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477 anonymously.
