Man arrested in connection with deadly shooting outside Kalamazoo child’s birthday party

Police have arrested a man accused in a fatal shooting that occurred outside a child’s birthday party in Kalamazoo, Michigan earlier this year.

Authorities said Nelson Devon Cobas, 37, was taken into custody Thursday evening in Newaygo County, Michigan on warrants related to the death of Jamel Jonte‑Jerome Coleman, 35.

Shooting followed argument outside party

According to investigators, Coleman was attending a child’s birthday celebration on Feb. 22 when a dispute broke out between him and Cobas outside the party location.

Police say Cobas allegedly pulled out a handgun during the confrontation and fired multiple shots at Coleman before leaving the scene.

Coleman died from his injuries.

Multiple felony charges filed

A seven-count felony warrant was issued for Cobas on Feb. 26. Prosecutors have charged him with:

  • Open murder

  • Assault with intent to murder

  • Possession of a firearm by a prohibited person

  • Carrying a concealed weapon

  • Three counts of felony firearm

The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety had previously warned the public that Cobas was considered armed and dangerous while he remained at large.

Arrest made with help from federal and state agencies

Cobas was arraigned Friday before Judge Richard Santoni. The court denied bond.

Authorities said the arrest was carried out with assistance from the United States Marshals Service and the Michigan State Police 6th District Fugitive Team.

“This arrest represents an important step toward justice for the victim and his loved ones,” said Capt. Danielle Guilds of the department’s Criminal Investigations Division.
