A 27-year-old man, Javier Sanjayzar, has been arrested in connection with a hit‑and‑run crash that killed a pedestrian riding a scooter in Little Havana. Sanjayzar, an undocumented immigrant, faces criminal charges and a possible immigration hold. He is currently being held at Miami-Dade’s TGK jail.
Charges and Court Hearing
At a bond hearing, Judge Mindy Glazer informed Sanjayzar that he is charged with:
-
Leaving the scene of a crash causing death
-
Driving without a valid driver’s license
The judge noted he has an immigration hold, which could lead to deportation. Bond was set at $25,000 per charge, totaling $50,000.
The Crash
The incident occurred on Dec. 30, 2025, at Southwest 6th Street and 14th Avenue. Police say Sanjayzar failed to stop at a stop sign and hit the pedestrian on a scooter. The victim suffered traumatic injuries, was intubated at Jackson Memorial Hospital, and died eight days later.
Investigation and Arrest
A traffic stop the following day helped break the case. A Miami police sergeant pulled over a 2018 Hyundai Tucson driving the wrong way, noting damage to the front consistent with the crash. Investigators later traced the SUV to Sanjayzar, who had rented the vehicle from another person.
Sanjayzar reportedly told the owner he had been in an accident but claimed the pedestrian walked away, a statement contradicted by the victim’s fatal injuries.
He was formally charged and taken into custody on Jan. 27.
Police Reminder
Miami police emphasized that leaving the scene of an accident can lead to serious criminal consequences.
“If you’re involved in an accident, call 911 and stay at the scene. Running away only makes things worse,” police said.
The victim’s identity has not been publicly released.
