Man shot, killed by Chicago police during car theft investigation on North Side

Chicago police shot and killed a man Tuesday night during an investigation into a stolen vehicle in the Arcadia Terrace neighborhood.

The Chicago Police Department said tactical officers were checking a stolen, unoccupied parked car around 10:30 p.m. in the 5700 block of North Washtenaw Avenue when a dark sedan pulled up with two men and a woman inside. According to police, the two men got out and tried to get into the stolen vehicle.

Officers approached them, and one man ran away. The other man got back into the driver’s seat of the sedan and ignored officers’ orders to get out.

Police said the driver suddenly accelerated, dragging an officer. The officer fired one shot, hitting the driver in the head. The sedan then crashed into a parked car.

Paramedics took the wounded man to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. His identity had not been released as of Wednesday afternoon.

Police said the woman inside the sedan was taken into custody, and officers recovered two firearms at the scene. The man who fled has not been found.

A neighbor, who gave only his first name, David, said the stolen vehicle had been parked on the block for three days. His wife heard the gunfire.

“I’m glad I wasn’t outside when it happened, but you know, what are you going to do?” David said. “I’m glad the cop wasn’t hurt. I’m glad the cop got the guy.”

Police said the officer who was dragged suffered minor injuries and is expected to recover.

The officer is now on administrative duty for at least 30 days while the Civilian Office of Police Accountability investigates the shooting.
